The course will take place in the London Campus of the West Dean College in the heart of Bloomsbury.

Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Paint outdoors in oil colours from life. Learn how to choose a subject and make a composition and finish a piece or two from various studies in the studio and outdoors.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The aim of this course is to learn and gain confidence in painting ‘en plein air’ ie. outdoors from life. The course is suitable for all levels however a basic drawing skill would be helpful.

You will have an opportunity to watch your tutor paint and demonstrate how he approaches a subject and then make a painting yourself under his direct guidance and supervision.

You will be taken through studies demonstrated in both plein air and in the studio to illustrate and explain how to use each method to its advantage. You will learn and paint in the studio with short experiences of painting outdoors. Be ready to paint in all weather, however, in extreme weather conditions, the course will take place solely inside the studio.

The course will cover range of topics such as composition, breaking of a subject, colours, tonal values, capturing light, atmosphere and more.

There would be group and individual discussions and talks on subjects related to ‘en plein air’ painting.

Course teaching 11am–5.15pm
Students arrive 10.30am-11am (coffee optional)
Morning teaching 11am-1pm
Lunch break between 1pm-2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon teaching 2pm-5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes 5.15pm

Your chance to spend the day painting en plein air in the stunning private gardens of Russell House, where John Singer Sargent famously painted Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose.

In this workshop led by Festival Ambassador Tushar Sabale, you will be painting the gardens from life, to capture the atmospheric light and essence of the place.

Tushar will cover how to choose a composition, use warm and cool colours, light and contrast along with colour mixing and brush marks. You will get an opportunity to watch Tushar paint as well as paint your own masterpiece through the day whilst discussing inspirations, techniques and other art theories.

Suitable for all skill levels painting in Oils and Acrylics only.

8th and 9th Sept 2025

Learn to simplify and paint Cityscapes in this two-day workshop with Tushar Sabale. The course will be taught in oils but you are welcome to use acrylics. The intention is to paint two cityscapes over the duration of the two days and we will cover composition, breaking and simplifying of a subject, colours, tonal values, capturing light, atmosphere and much more.

The workshop will commence with an hour long demo where students can watch me paint and hear me talk about how I approach my subject and the choices I make. Students will then start a painting, and there will be group as well and one to on guidance, supervision and discussions. After lunch I will do another demo where I will finish the morning painting, followed by students getting back to finishing their painting. Day two will follow a similar format, and in the last half an hour of the day, we will have a show and tell with a constructive critiquing session.

PLEASE NOTE THIS WORKSHOP PRECEEDS TUSHAR’S TWO DAY EN PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP SO COULD BE BOOKED IN CONJUNCTION WITH IT.

10th and 11th Sept 2025

Learn to paint en plein air in this two-day workshop with Tushar Sabale. The course will be taught in oils but you are welcome to use acrylics. We start with an hour long plein air demo outside the studio, where students will see me paint and hear me talk about how I approach my subject and the choices I make. This will be followed by students doing their own outdoor studies where there will be group as well and one to one guidance, supervision and discussions. After lunch I will do another demo  of a painting from the original outdoor study in the studio, followed by students doing the same. Day two will follow a similar format, and in the last half an hour of the day, we will have a show and tell with a constructive critiquing session. Please note, this workshop will be studio-based if the weather is unfavourable.

This workshop is designed to accompany the Tushar Sabale’s upcoming exhibition ‘London, My Home’.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to see and learn the use of oil colours. Tushar will talk through and demonstrate his process of choosing and composing a complex scene and further simplifying it. You will be painting a familiar London landmark using a reference from start to finish, understanding colours, values and handling of oil colours.

All levels are welcome.
